Models and context

Discover available models and control context refresh.

See what is available

With no model configured, each runtime chooses its own default. Discover ids from the runtime installed on the host:

airship models ls
airship models defaults

Use an id returned by discovery, rather than guessing a model name.

Choose defaults for future sessions

Replace <model> with an available id:

airship models use claude '<model>' --role orchestrator
airship models use codex '<model>' --role lane

Add --host box-a for a host override. Use start --model, --effort or --ctx-limit to override one launch. The Mac app exposes runtime, model and effort in Settings › Defaults.

Set a context threshold

airship models ctx claude 70%
airship models ctx codex auto

This controls when refresh or compaction happens, not the model’s maximum context window. Claude refresh saves a handoff, clears context and resumes. Codex uses a sized compaction point. Orchestrators have refresh enabled.

If discovery cannot determine your chosen model’s window, set a JSON map using the model id and its token capacity:

airship config set models.claude.windows '{"<model>": 200000}'

Use the real capacity of your model; 200000 is an example.

Change an existing session

airship help set

Use airship set or the app’s session controls. Model and effort changes can restart the same conversation; context timing differs by runtime. Read the returned application message before assuming a change is active. Defaults alone do not update sessions already running.
